There are four different types of Ibex: Beceite, Gredos, Rhonda and South Eastern. Each are a unique animal to hunt. Explore the beauty that Spain has to offer. A country rich with culture and beautiful animals. For the ultimate challenge, complete the Ibex Grand Slam!
BECEITE IBEX
There are two horn types in this area
– The “lira” horns, pointing back; like the majority of the Ibex in Spain.
– The traditional Beceite “palm” sometimes with almost completely flat horns.
The population of Beceite Ibex in Spain is wide spread in this area. Rather than big groups of Ibex roaming together, they have colonized all the different counties in this region. They love rocky low hills, arid terrains. Fitness is important as these areas are difficult to walk.
The Hunt
In this region, Becite Ibex are common so the opportunity is good. Though the terrain is difficult, it is easier than other regions and types of Ibex. It is a classic mountain hunt even though the Gredos mountains are not a very high altitude area.
The ibex is light on its feet, extremely alert, and very easy to spook. But the good part is Gredos has high density of Ibex, so it is not difficult to find the different herds. Finding truly large individuals, however, can be more challenging.
Dates
The rut of the Ibex is from late November to mid December; depending on
temperatures. During these weeks you will be able to find the biggest males fighting with other males to control the female groups. The hunt is much easier during these weeks. All cold winter months are quite good to find good males. When early spring arrives, the old big males seems disappear, and only the young 4-7 year old males remain in the females groups.
Please inquire for specific dates.

GREDOS IBEX
The Gredos Ibex is the most famous and most beautiful of the Spanish Ibex. The Mountains of Gredos west of Madrid have been the Royal Hunting area for the Kings of Spain for centuries. The king’s protection has allowed this Ibex to survive and keep a good population in these mountains. Arriving to the hunting area by car, is a three hour drive from Madrid – Barajas International Airport.
The Gredos Ibex is famous because of the “Lyre” shape of their horns. In this type, their horns grow up much more clearly this backward curve lyre shape. This is the animal that you usually have in mind when you think of a Spanish Ibex.
Definitely the most exclusive Ibex, Gredos Ibex hutns are much more expensive than the other three Ibex. It is only hunted in this area in the center of the country, mainly in National Parks protected by the Government.
The Hunt
This is not a very physically demanding hunt. The typical hunting style involves driving checking the sides of the hills, trying to locate the herds. Once herds of males have been located we will walk to get a good shooting position. Frequently we will need to make long shoots from side to side of the mountains. Precision is key.
The hunting areas are small villages in the coastal mountains. Signal can be quite bad in these rural areas with bad roads, and very cold in the winter months.
