Trip Report Details
As with all our past hunting adventures over the years it’s always as much or more about the people we share them with and the people we meet, and greatest of all the memories made. And this trip is definitely no exception to that rule. After several months of anticipation the time for our first Aoudad Sheep Hunt came. We flew from St Louis Missouri to Texas where we were picked up by our best friend Wesley Stidham. Wesley was joining us for the hunt. We drove a couple hours to the ranch. Met the guides and got settled into the Ranch house and shot our guns. Then split up with our guides for the evening hunt.
Our Evening Hunt
Judy and I went with one guide and Wesley went out with another guide. All of us headed out for different parts of the Ranch and began glassing and using the spotting scope to try and locate some sheep. Everyone spent several hours at different spots and had seen some ewe’s and small Ram’s when my guide spotted several sheep at several miles away. Then we drove around to get closer to them so we could evaluate and see if there were any good Rams in the group. We met up with a guide and his daughter another guide. And began a spot and stalk that would end up to be over 2 miles by it’s glorious end. Judy was up to be the first shooter. We stalked for a good while and distance then began slipping through the broken brush and terrain. Finally getting within 200 yards and Judy waiting for over 20 minutes to finally get a shot which she took but didn’t connect.
Judy Gets Her Ram
We were in a large basin and the sheep weren’t aware of where the shot had came from. So we waited a bit and started slipping toward their location again. Very slowly stalking to try and get another chance. Suddenly, the guide motions for Judy to come and be ready and she quickly got on the shooting sticks and took her 2nd shot at the same Ram dropping him in his tracks at 52 yards. We were congratulating her and were giving high fives all around, when my guide says excitedly there’s the other big Ram !!!!!
I Get My Ram!
“Bryan get on the sticks,” the guide tells me so we got into position for a shot. The ram was over 200 yards away looking straight at us. And then here he came. He closed the distance to 181 yards and stopped and looked at us straight on so I took the shot hitting him in the chest with my Bergara 300 Win Mag. He ran only a few yards and went down. Judy and I took our first Aoudad Sheep with a double only a few minutes apart. What an awesome hunt and memories.
Wesley Takes His Ram
At the same time in another part of the ranch Wesley and his guide were making a stalk on a great ram!! Wesley taking his with two well placed shots. Excitement all around !!!
The first trip out of hunting camp. Then the work began caping and preparing the game. No problem for sure. But the only thing with our hunt was that it ended so soon. Wasn’t really supposed to start our hunt till the next morning. LOL
